A leading bishop said the Catholic Church in the Sudan is already involved in the preparations for the referendum and has a role to play in the process leading to the consultation on South Sudan's self-determination. Bishop Caesar Mazzolari of Rumbek told SCR News that the network of catholic radios played a leading role ahead the elections, a role to instruct people the diocesan FM stations would repeat in preparation for the Referendum Bishop Mazzolari added that the 101 Days for Peace campaign is another means to create a conducive atmosphere for the referendum. He explained that the campaign headed by Solidarity with Southern Sudan and Catholic Relief Services runs from September 21, 2010 Ð UN Peace Day Ð to January 1, 2011 Ð the Catholic Day of Peace. Bishop Mazzolari said that the 101 Days for Peace aim at building up an atmosphere of harmony ahead of the Referendum through prayers, events and workshops throughout the country. The bishop of Rumbek urged the international community to support South Sudan. He added the South did not need prophets of doom who created anxiety but people who trusted the Southerners and what they want to achieve. Bishop Mazzolari said the elections results were a clear indication that the South wanted self-determination, establish their full identity and steer they own destiny despite economic and other hardships.
