CLASHES BREAK OUT AT JUBA UNIVERSITY
Clashes have broken out at Juba University between students from Upper Nile and Eastern Equatoria after a friendly football match the Equatorians won.
A Juba University student who refused to be named told Bakhita Radio this afternoon that the clashes apparently started after a group of Upper Nile students beat a Eastern Equatorian player for hurting one of their athletes during the match. The source said Eastern Equatoria students complained to the Students Union and as the body did not take any action they retaliated beating anybody from Upper Nile.
Another source said the problem was fuelled after the Union president, Simon Ajang, called a number of security personnel on two pickup vehicles to beat students at the campus.
The sources said the clashes began yesterday evening and are still going on.
The incident restarted with a procession this morning against the Students Union.
The students used stones to hit each other.
The victims are receiving treatment at Juba Teaching Hospital.
Bakhita Radio was unable to reach the leaders of the Students Union who are in hiding fearing their safety.
The University is closed.
